Experience

Having an aspiring, knowledgeable, chemist visit our chemistry classroom introduced a new perspective and purpose to the pursuit of studying chemistry. Isaac was a diverse guest instructor by his age, gender, and residence location. My students range from 10th grade to 12th grade. At an age close to the students, currently employed in the field of chemistry, Isaac brought a real-word connection to the benefit and possibilities of pursuing chemistry after high school graduation. Isaac was very knowledgeable on the subject of acids and bases and was able to comfortably deliver a college-like lecture on the topic. This experience introduced my students to a different presentation style, requiring new listening techniques. Additionally, having the guest instructor in person, instead of digital video, was a differentiated delivery presentation, accommodating additional learning styles.

My time in EDTP 639 concluded with me teaching chemistry to students at Duluth High School in Georgia. The students in my courses have had an unfortunate experience to not have a chemistry teacher since they returned from winter break in January 2024. I was hired to be their new chemistry teacher beginning on February 29 half-way through the unit on solutions. The first unit I had to teach from beginning to end was on acids and bases. Feeling completely lost, and desperate to restore confidence and academic integrity to these chemistry classes, I solicited a guest instructor to give a unit overview, my son Isaac Robinson. Isaac is a chemistry major concluding his sophomore year at UMD College Park. Isaac is on an academic presidential scholarship to UMD, is on the pre-pharmacy track, works as a licensed pharmacy technician close to campus, and belongs to the UMD chapter of the professional fraternity of chemistry. At the age of 19, Isaac is both a peer and an expert on chemistry in the real-world post high school graduation.
